The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos branch, has issued a stern response to the Federal Government, accusing the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Maruf Alausa, of making “misleading statements” about the government’s fulfillment of agreements with university workers.
The development comes ahead of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for November 8–9, 2025, where members will decide whether to resume the suspended strike if pending demands remain unaddressed.
In a statement signed by the branch chairperson, Prof. Jurbe Joseph Molwus, the union recalled the four-week ultimatum issued to the government on October 22, lamenting that halfway through the grace period, “not much progress has been recorded.”
ASUU noted that its members have not received crucial entitlements such as 3.5 months’ withheld salaries, arrears from the 25/35 percent wage award, promotion arrears, and unpaid salaries for certain members. “What we need are credit alerts, not misleading statements,” the statement declared.
The union further raised concerns over the N50 billion revitalisation fund, insisting that despite government claims of release, no university has received any portion of the fund. It also dismissed as “false and embarrassing” the Minister’s statement that ₦2.3 billion had been disbursed to clear salary and promotion arrears across universities, calling the amount “grossly inadequate and almost insulting.”
ASUU accused Dr. Alausa of “inconsistent and contradictory statements” and urged him to engage in genuine dialogue rather than issuing palliatives. “Palliatives do not cure diseases,” the union emphasized.
