The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has stated that a single five-year term is sufficient for Vice Chancellors of Nigerian universities to make meaningful impact in office.
Prof. Egbewole made this known last Monday, October 20, 2025, during a press briefing ahead of the institution’s 40th Convocation Ceremonies. Responding to questions from newsmen, he emphasized that five years remains adequate for any Chief Executive of a State, Federal, or private university to leave a lasting legacy.
According to him, those who are unable to make significant contributions within such a period may not be able to achieve much even if given an extended tenure. The VC, who is currently serving his third year in office, also highlighted the demanding nature of the role, describing it as energy-sapping and requiring full dedication throughout the term.
Prof. Egbewole further disclosed that he looks forward to returning to his family after completing his tenure in 2027. He urged his colleagues nationwide to maximize the privilege entrusted to them and avoid seeking a second term, noting that individuals who truly work hard would not desire an extension.
Speaking on other institutional matters, the Vice Chancellor assured that the University of Ilorin remains committed to fostering a productive relationship with both staff and students. He maintained that mutual understanding and cooperation will continue to sustain the University’s longstanding record of uninterrupted academic calendar, to the benefit of students, parents, and the country at large.
