The Federal Government has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its planned industrial action, stating that dialogue and negotiation remain the best route to resolving outstanding issues in the university system.
In a joint statement, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, revealed that the government has made a “comprehensive offer” to ASUU and is awaiting an official response.
They stated that the offer addresses key concerns of ASUU related to working conditions, governance, and staff welfare.
Part of the proposed intervention includes a robust Teaching Allowance intended to reflect the value of academic work and motivate lecturers across public universities.
However, they noted that some demands fall under the authority of individual university governing councils particularly issues around internal governance, appointments, and promotions and thus are being handled at the institutional level.
The Ministers also warned that the “No Work, No Pay” provision remains extant under Nigerian labor law, and that it would be enforced should ASUU go ahead with the strike.
The statement was signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, on 12 October 2025.
