The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has dismissed the Federal Government’s last-minute plea to call off its planned strike, declaring that the intervention came “a little too late.”
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, criticizing the government and the Ministry of Education for their slow response to the union’s demands. He noted that after a prior meeting in Sokoto, ASUU had given the government three weeks to act. Yet, no meaningful communication came until two working days before the strike ultimatum expired.
“We went for a meeting in Sokoto … we never heard a word from them until the three weeks elapsed — not a word … until we threatened action.”
Piwuna emphasized that the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement remains unresolved after eight years, and that the government’s recent appeal is too little, too late.
He reiterated that unless substantial action is taken before the ultimatum expires on Sunday, ASUU will embark on a two-week warning strike, as previously directed.
