University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Name Change Controversy
FAS REPORTS Reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) doesn’t agree with President Bola Tinubu’s decision to rename UNIMAID after former President Muhammadu Buhari. Here’s what’s going on.
Why ASUU is Against the Name Change
FAS REPORTS report that ASUU at UNIMAID thinks renaming the university is a political move. They say UNIMAID has a big history and is known worldwide with its current name. They’re worried that changing the name might hurt the university’s legacy.
– “The action is not only shocking but a brazen affront to the sanctity of our alma mater,” ASUU said in a statement.
– UNIMAID is getting close to its 50th birthday, and ASUU wants to keep the university’s original name.
What Led to This
President Tinubu announced the renaming during a special meeting on July 17 to honor Muhammadu Buhari. But lots of people weren’t happy about it – students, alumni, and even some who supported Buhari didn’t like the idea. They said there are already lots of places named after Buhari.
UNIMAID’s Story
UNIMAID was started in 1975. It’s one of Nigeria’s top federal universities. The university has done well despite lots of safety problems in the North-East part of Nigeria. ASUU says this history is important and shouldn’t be changed because of a name change.
What’s Next
ASUU says they’ll work with their members and leaders to stop the name change. They’re asking everyone who cares about the university to help keep its name the same.
