NAPS Calls for Polytechnic Upgrade to Degree-Awarding Institutions
The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has urged the government to upgrade polytechnics to degree-awarding institutions. In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Eshiofune Oghayan, NAPS proposed that polytechnics be empowered to award Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Science in Technology degrees. This move aims to bridge the gap between Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) holders.
Policy Advocacy and Initiatives
NAPS also advocated for several initiatives, including:
• A Student Insurance Scheme to provide financial protection to students
• Mental health awareness campaigns to promote students' well-being
• Improved campus security measures to ensure a safe learning environment
Appreciation for President Tinubu's Education Initiatives
The association commended President Bola Tinubu's administration for its record investment in education, highlighting the allocation of N2.52 trillion to the education sector in the 2025 national budget. NAPS also noted other key achievements, such as the approval of N683.4 billion for tertiary education interventions and the disbursement of over N104 billion through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
Adupe Day" Celebration
To express gratitude for the administration's efforts, NAPS has declared June 12 as "Adupe Day" (meaning "thank you" in Yoruba). The association plans to organize a mass march across the country, dubbed the "One Million Student March," to demonstrate appreciation for the government's commitment to education.
