The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to appear before it. This directive follows ongoing investigations into issues surrounding the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Background
The committee had previously invited WAEC to provide clarifications on several concerns related to the conduct of the SSCE. However, WAEC failed to honor the invitation. The committee’s chairman, Hon. Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji, expressed disappointment over the council’s absence, especially given the volume of complaints from the public.
Key Concerns Raised
- Late-night Exams: There are reports of students writing exams as late as midnight in some examination centers.
- Exam Irregularities: Various irregularities have been observed and reported during the examination process.
- Public Concern: The committee emphasized the need to restore public confidence and ensure these issues do not recur.
Ultimatum Issued
WAEC has been directed to appear before the committee on Friday, May 30, 2025. The chairman warned that failure to comply may lead the House to invoke its constitutional authority to compel WAEC’s attendance.
He further clarified that the committee’s goal is not to target or discredit WAEC, but to ensure that necessary steps are taken to address the current challenges and uphold the integrity of national examinations.
